The Story Behind Hand Me Forward

A simple act of generosity from friends and neighbors inspired a local hand-me-down pipeline for other families.

It started with a bag of hand-me-downs.

When my son was little, I was fortunate to have generous friends and neighbors whose boys were just a year or two older than mine.

As their children outgrew clothing, they passed it along to us. What started as an ordinary act of kindness became an ongoing pipeline: the next size of pajamas, shirts, pants, and jackets would arrive just when we needed it.

It was a remarkable relief. Less shopping. Less spending. Fewer errands. And one less burden for Mom to handle.

Looking at another generous pile of hand-me-downs one day, I found myself thinking about the families on the other side of the exchange. When my son outgrows these clothes, who could use them next?

What if every mom could have a reliable hand-me-down pipeline — even without friends or neighbors with children a year or two ahead?

Especially single mothers and families trying to stretch every dollar.

That question became Hand Me Forward: a simple, neighborhood-based way to connect a giver, a receiver, and the next family after that. Nobody needs to upload 30 photos, negotiate a price, or commit to a new friendship.

A little less work. A lot more possibility.

Families sign up with their child’s size and their location. Hand Me Forward coordinates a compatible introduction. The families arrange a convenient exchange themselves. As the children grow, good clothing continues forward.

We’re beginning in Columbus, Ohio. The hope is to grow one city at a time while keeping the experience personal, practical, and easy.

Because good clothes deserve another childhood — and mothers deserve one less thing to worry about.
